These two terms are very frequently mentioned during each one of your visits to the fertility clinic. Both of them imply different techniques using the same gametes, sperm and egg.


ICSI stands for Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection. This is a technique, which takes one sperm inside a needle, and the sperm is then injected into the egg.


IVF stands for the In Vitro Fertilization technique, which is the placement of a sperm sample on a dish containing one or more eggs. This way the sperm will naturally penetrate de egg.


Both techniques are complex and require to be performed in an embryology laboratory.


Doctors usually have different criteria to decide if a patient goes to ICSI or IVF. Some of the criteria to do ICSI are:


  • Poor quality sperm. This can be shown either in the quantity, motility or morphology.
  • Patients over 40 years old
  • Prior IVF failures
  • Borderline sperm DNA fragmentation


Criteria to consider IVF:


  • Good quality sperm. This has to be shown at least in all of the criteria of motility, quantity, and morphology.
  • Patients under 40 years old
  • Sperm DNA fragmentation under 25%


Your fertility specialist will let you know about the results of the analysis and the criteria you have to either undergo ICSI or IVF.




Sometimes a split case of IVF/ICSI can be performed, and in most cases where the sperm quality is borderline, or there is unexplained infertility there is a good chance of success. A study shows that performing ICSI on at least some of the oocytes will avoid unnecessary fertilization failure in patients with borderline semen (1)(2).


Several serious studies have not shown any difference on embryo quality obtained with ICSI or FIV. Some of them concluded: embryo quality does not seem to be influences by the mode of fertilization (IVF or ICSI) (3).


Another important fact is that live birth depends mostly on embryo quality than the method used for fertilization (4).


Some reproductive centers prefer to do 100% ICSI because the fertilization rates can be higher than using conventional IVF.


The conclusion is that the criteria to decide whether to use conventional IVF or ICSI should be taken into account in order to evaluate the true fertilization capability of the patients.

The search for life on Earth

earthPast, present, future. Infertility was, is and will still being a challenge in the world, actually it is increasing dramatically and will become a bigger challenge than what it is today. We Doctors strive to learn more and more everyday about the peculiar behaviors of Mother Nature, however we still far from the truth.

My deceased grandmother used to say: “the problems of today will become the plagues of the future”. Today I understand what she meant. We are trying to solve problems today that will be very harder to solve in the future. Let’s analyze the way we humans behave. We do have natural resources which we are consuming without the appreciation and gratefulness deserved. We do have amazing, perfect and healthy bodies, which we damage and destroy, with our daily habits. We are part of a perfect designed universe that wants us to learn and grow; instead we are stuck in our stubbornness and believe that we do not need anything else. We think very highly of ourselves when we discover something new, however we still have a lot more work to do with what we’ve accomplished, to collaborate with futures generations’s accomplishments. There is no reason or logic for our lives, according to most humans. We fight the challenges that are put in our way without understanding that those challenges were there for a reason. That is the life we are living right now, and it is not a healthy life.

Most humans have needs, emptiness, loneliness and frustrations. They expect to fulfill them with marriage, parenthood, friendship or material things. This is not the way, and if you live your life based on those premises it won’t be a great life.

We are looking for life on earth, meaningful life. The one that creates healthy, intelligent/wiser, happier human beings who will admire, adore, be grateful and contribute for the gifts nature is giving us. Humans are not the only ones whose life brings challenges. Other species also encounter the same challenges in their own way and life on earth.

The challenges we are facing today will be even bigger challenges for future generations. Because we are not contributing to eradicate them, we are hiding them into our own vanity of believing we are better than Mother Nature, and we are not.

Genetics in Fertility

Genetics are a contributing factor in up to 10 percent of couples who experience infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss.

Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins. The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder (taken from www.23andme.com).

Specialists in Reproductive Medicine performing in vitro fertilisation not always have the expected results. When genetics comes to the picture it changes everything. Diseases and chromosomic alterations can be evident and related to the recurrent failures with in vitro fertilisation. Today the DNA analysis has been offered as a very useful tool to diagnose diseases we could not detect easily on patients. In occasion they were detected late in the pregnancy or analysing samples of a miscarriage. DBA testing is a useful tool for many reasons.

With genetic testing we are able to check for our DNA integrity and the possible diseases, alterations or mutations that can be present. In this way there is a possibility for prevention of passing on these diseases to our offsprings. There are a number of reasons why doctors recommend these tests. There are genetic tests that help to predict fertility decline in women.

Human’s karyotype it is composed of 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes in each cell.


From this 23 pairs we do have 22 pairs called autosomes and 1 pair called sexual chromosomes (X,Y). A change in the number of chromosomes can cause problems with growth, development and function of the body’s system. These changes can occur during the formation of the reproductive cells (egg and sperm), in early fetal development, or in any cell after birth. A gain or loss of chromosomes from the normal 46 is called aneuploidy. This is due to a sporadic event of nondisjunction (non-division) of chromosomes.karyot

A common form of aneuploidy is trisomy (presence of extra chromosome in the cells). An example is Down syndrome, which has an extra chromosome 21. Monosomy is the loss of one chromosome in the cells. Turner syndrome is an example, where we find an absence of the X chromosome in women.

Each chromosome has three parts. The top (short part) named p arm, the middle called centromere, and the bottom called q arm (long part).


In the male we can find infertility factors associated with genetic risks, like non-obstructive azoospermia, oligospermia and the congenital absence of the vas deferens (bilateral or unilateral). These factors carry a risk associated with chromosome abnormality and microdeletion of the Y chromosome.

Regarding to women. It is very important to mention that age is the most significant cause of infertility in our medical practice. The chances of conceiving a normal, healthy child decrease with age. When a 30 year old woman has approximately a 20% chance of conceiving each month, a 40 year old woman has 5% chances. Genetic testing can be use at any stage of life. From the embryo to the very old age.



It is also important to know that the greater the age, the greater the chances to have fetal chromosomic alterations. Women over the age of 40 should consider genetic testing together with their FIV/ICSI procedure.

It is advisable to consider preimplantation genetic screening or diagnosis for aneuploidy (PGS/PGD), and prenatal screening and diagnosis of fetal aneuploidy, for women over the age of 40 or with family or personal history of chromosomic disease. The prenatal screening includes the non-invasive tests: maternal serum screening, nuchal translucency ultrasound and noninvasive prenatal testing of fetal DNA in maternal blood. And the invasive ones are the chorionic villus sampling (taken at 10-12 weeks of gestation) and amniocentesis (taken at >15 weeks of gestation).

These test are a help also for women with recurrent miscarriage. Data has shown that 60% of pregnancies lost from couples with 2-4 miscarriages are chromosomally abnormal (Ogasawara et al., 2000), and 76% of embryos are chromosomally abnormal for patients with >3 miscarriages (Pellicer et al., 1999).

There is another diagnose associated with genetic risk in women called the primary ovarian insufficiency. It will present with elevation of the FHS hormone in women under 35 years. Usually happens between 40 to 50 years (menopause). In this condition happens before that age. It has been associated with the FMR1 gene (X-chromosome).

The following data taken from the American Society for Reproductive medicine (ASRM) shows the rate of reduction in pregnancy loss after preimplantation genetic diagnose.


This following data shows the percentage of abortion rate versus take-home babies with and without preimplantation genetic testing.


In conclusion, genetic testing has a lot of value when it comes to study the anomaly or alterations that can be detected with time, as a preventive measure. There is no need to wait for the anomaly or chromosomic alteration to appear. However, it is to note that genetic testing still not available for everyone because of its high cost and the need to freeze embryos to wait for results, as the case of preimplantation genetic testing. Although these techniques can reduce the time to achieve successful pregnancies and it will impact future costs for IVF/ICSI unsuccessful attempts.

This is the preventive medicine. Scientists and doctors need to be up-to-date with the advances and tools available to diagnose alterations that were almost impossible to detect years ago.

But remember, negative results from genetic testing do not rule out an unidentified genetic etiology.

The cocktail of stress hormones.


Stress is a condition that we do know now it can be harmful for our body to function properly. Countless researches have shown the biological effects this so called “disease” can cause tour bodies. Especially in the fertility area, this condition is a major cause of infertility in males and females. During the medical consultation we always hear the word: “stress”. It can be stress because of the job, lifestyle, family problems, pressure in the relationship, etc. There are many causes.


What we specialists in the fertility field know is that stress is a major contributor for infertility, and when patients do not overcome the fact they need to reduce it, then their chances of conceive successfully and carry a healthy pregnancy are lower than the average.


I have been writing a lot about stress and different ways to manage it. Yoga and meditation can be a great way to start; there is also hypnosis for stress management, mindfulness therapies, and even just taking some time off everything (not just work) can work wonders.


Every time you are under stress think: “this feelings and emotions are not healthy for me and my body, and perhaps there is nothing I can do about all these problems, I should let them go and deal with whatever I can right now. The rest will resolve eventually”. It is a very difficult statement, but is the best one to find peace and understand that we do not have full control of all the circumstances in life.


Everyone wishes to be happy, yet very few persons make the necessary effort to adopt a course of action that leads to happiness. Most people, while idly wishing for the strength and ability to climb the peak of happiness, instead keep rolling down the hill of life. Lacking imagination, they do not foresee the result of their folly. It remains for some terrible nightmare of experience to awaken them to their error. Fertility treatments for gays, lesbians and unmarried persons. Is it a matter of ethics?


In occasions we have to make decisions that will definitely impact the future of the world in many ways. Some people argued that being gay comes with genetics. There is a great article about this topic I would like to refer to (http://bit.ly/1E4rFAM). In this study Kenrick Vezina makes a pretty good work at understanding the claims of some geneticists regarding genetics homosexuality. Michael Bailey, a geneticists from Northwestern University and Kevin Mitchell from Trinity College in Dublin claimed homosexuality has a very strong genetic component linked to the Y chromosome.
For what I understood in their work there is a difference between sexual preference and sexual orientation, being the later related to the Y chromosome. Preference is whether you are attracted to males or females, however orientation is the one linked to that Y chromosome and it is moderately heritable. There are regions on this chromosome that influence the development of sexual orientation in men. They say there is no universal path to homosexuality across all people and heterosexuality is not a single default state. For such, there should be a set of other genes that work together and influence the sexual orientation. The conclusion of this work: homosexuality is not a choice, the same as heterosexuality it is not either. It should not be labeled as a disorder. I encourage you to have a look at that article and make your own conclusions.

Where are those people who labeled homosexuality as a disease? And what is the reason they do not like it?

I have a great story. I have these great friends. They are both from well-educated backgrounds, both professionals and successful. They had been together in a stable relationship for over 10 years, even stronger and more solid than many heterosexual couples I have met. One day they made a decision, to have a baby and raise him/her with all the love they could possible give and the security of a stable home. They went for in vitro fertility treatment with an egg donor, and off course needed a gestational carrier. The treatment went well, and they had their first beautiful baby. She was gorgeous and bright. They could not be happier. I got used to check my Facebook every other day just to see the lovely photos they were sharing with all their love ones. I could not be more proud of them. She is today a very warm, lovely and smart baby girl, today almost three years old. They had another baby two years later.


In my practice, I have seen heterosexual couples that have lots of problems undergoing fertility treatments with third persons, as in the case of egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation, surrogacy or gestational carriers. 1 in 5 couples using third persons will develop problems dealing with frustrations, anger, fear and doubt. In the case of my gay friends, I never saw any doubt. The procedure made them stronger and their relationship evolved and became more solid, full of love and joy.

Fertility specialists usually have doubts whether to treat or not same sex couples, much more than to treat unmarried ones (as to men and women). Most of them are motivated by ethics, religion or family background. For me it is hard to understand that today, there are still a number of specialists in reproductive medicine who do not approve to treat gay, lesbians or unmarried people.


I strongly agree with the American Society of Reproductive Medicine that an over-arching ethical question is whether it is acceptable to help unmarried individuals or couples to reproduce, regardless of their sexual orientation. Several investigations have concluded that children born and raised from these couples do not show difference from children born and raised from heterosexual couples. Also it is interesting to see that in 2011, 46% of all US births were to unmarried women. This also shows that a large percentage of professional women have decided to undergo the path of parenting without the need of a male partner, in this case they use donors chosen from sperm banks. This figure it is likely to be increasing in the next years.

Discrimination laws in several countries have been changing. Today it is a whole different story. We can even see sanctions applied to fertility doctors or any members of the fertility team who denies treatment to these patients. Although it is not a comfortable idea for these patients to have a medical team agree to treat them because they are forced, and not because they want to do it. It changes things. The doctor-patient relationship will be difficult in those cases.


Currently in the United States there is an estimated 6 to 14 million children being raised by at least one gay or lesbian parent, usually as a result of a heterosexual relation. The proportion of children born to unmarried mothers hit a record 47.5% (number of 346,595) in the UK last year. The figure has risen from 25% in 1988 and just 11% in 1979. Also, demographic data show significant diversity among same-sex couples with children. The percentage by regions varies as in the South 26%, New England 24% and the Pacific States 21%. In 2000 census about 65,000 children lived with same sex parents. In 2012 110,000 live with gay parents, over a 100% increase.


According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), there is a ethical debate that includes three important factors:

1. The reproductive interest of unmarried and gay and lesbian persons.
2. The protection of the welfare of offspring.
3. Whether professional autonomy, combined with prevailing law, provides a limit on the duty not to discriminate on the basis of marital status or sexual orientation.

For this reason, given the importance to individuals of having children, there is no sound basis for denying to single persons and gays and lesbians the same rights to reproduce that other individuals enjoy.


This has been a very important step for countries to allow these patients to receive the same treatments as the other patients have. Having say that, there is not justification for discrimination. Gay couples, lesbian and unmarried persons have the same right to receive treatments and to use surrogacy as a way for them to make parenthood happen. If children born from these patients do not show differences in their upbringing in comparison with children born from heterosexual couples, what is the issue then?. After all, what does “normal upbringing means”?

The American Psychological Association concluded there is no scientific evidence that parenting effectiveness is related to parental sexual orientation. Lesbian and gay parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide supportive and healthy environments for their children.


Over the last years there has been a lot of controversy. Ethics committee’s reunions, multiple groups, religious groups, societies, governments, all reviewing this subject very carefully. Most of them concluded: the same rights for everyone, without discrimination.

However, still lot of controversy and discussion in some places where it is really hard to accept this equality and the refusal to change the society model that has been implemented for those people. It gets even harder in religious countries where those practices can be labeled as unbearable and aberrations.Some countries still penalising and punishing homosexuality.

Human Cloning

Human Cloning“ The potential of cloning to alleviate suffering…is so great in the medium term that I believe it would be immoral not to clone human embryos for this purpose”. Ian Wilmut.

Cloning is a procedure that removes the nucleus of a cell (that will become a surrogate cell) and replace it will the nucleus of the cell from the organism or species intended to be cloned. There are discussions regarding this technique since it’s first attempt during the 90’s where animal cloning was possible through the creation of the well-know Dolly sheep (named after the singer Dolly Parton, because the cloned DNA was taken from a mammary gland).

There has been news regarding scientists claiming to have cloned human embryos with success. Today, therapeutic cloning it has been allowed in some countries for research purposes only, until the technique shows to be safe. Most news have only been lies based in scientific claims with no scientific based of what they got as a result and the models used. However, they’re serious groups of scientists working today towards the future use of this technique.


Human cloning has cause several moral, ethical and religious debates, no wonder the reasons why. But some of these groups have accepted the fact that therapeutic cloning might help alleviate diseases that could cause humans to be affected in the future.

Some people believe that cloning a human will result in the same human’s cloned, with exactly the same physical characteristics, personalities, etc. Well, this is a misconception as while they share the genome, they will be more like twins instead of the same person cloned. In this case, for those expecting to create an exact carbon copy of a loved one, this might not be the desired way to accomplish it.

This technique in animals might be an advantage for recovering endangered or even extinct species, although it also goes against believes that every specie has its own time on earth.

Human cloning

It does not refer to the natural conception and delivery of identical twins. The possibility of human cloning has raised controversies. There is still a long way for this technique to be properly used. It might take another 50 years for humans to see the results of the use of human cloning for therapeutic means. Also, in 50 years we will have created humans with different conceptions about science and life, it will be easier for them to understand and accomplish new discoveries without so many prejudices that still exist in our generation. How to describe the feeling of witnessing what I call “the bridge” between dimensions and realizing that feeling was always there, waiting to be explored further and understood in a deeper spiritual sense. The feeling is unimaginable. And this was my experience.

I am a doctor, specialist in Reproductive Medicine, a scientist, a former believer that everything could be demonstrated, even the things that have not being demonstrated yet, because their time to be demonstrated it is about to come. Now I know everything has a time.

I dedicated my entire life to science and medicine, believing that science had most of the answers. And most times found the explanation I was looking for, because it seemed they had the correct and scientific logic for most of the phenomena occurred in nature. My beliefs were that we had all the tools to find answers, explanations, reasons and logic. That was a fact until now, because realized I was far from being right. And the true was about to come to me. For some reason it was shown to me.


In Reproductive Medicine most events are amazing. From the beginning of the formation of each gamete, to the fertilization of the eggs, developing of the embryo, division, implantation, growing of the fetus, birth, every event is amazing. Research in this field had shown science is capable to find answers for most of the events happening during each step, and even go further to find explanations to events that before were unexplained. Scientist and observers have been looking at these events during centuries. Since the 14th century, scientists were looking the sperm freezing, but it was not until the 20th century that we developed ways of freezing and thaw sperm in a way that the technique does not affect the sperm capacity of fertilization. I can keep going non-stop writing about every single phenomenon our nature is showing us in Reproduction. This happens because I love what I do. I love it so much that I decided to dedicate most of my life to help people to conceive. It has been a long path, exhausting sometimes, and very challenging. But I simply love it. The number of people unable to conceive naturally has been increasing exponentially, especially in the last 10 years. The reason? We do not know yet, although we have some presumptions based on evidence.image001


A few years ago I made a big change in my life and decided to pursue my passion for fertility. We created a team and started working with several patients who needed help to conceive. It was challenging, and led me to discover the things I’ve discovered today.


Working in this field, with patients, each of them coming to me with a single different case, and a single different problem, was one of the most challenging events. However, the most difficult one was to have a few couples, coming to us for several attempts, without a real clinical cause of failure; events we doctors call “unexplained infertility”. The frustration was difficult to handle at that time. And there were many times when I sat on my desk thinking, “what else should we do?”


I started to have more questions to events that were difficult to explain with words. Still difficult to explain them today. “What else could we do?” That question kept going through my head for months. We had medical meetings, with doctors having many more years of experience than myself, and we could not find the right answers, or even the ones that would give the patient a light of hope during the procedure. I was restless, determined to know. I was not used to dream, not even day dreaming, because logic was a fundamental brick in my conception of life. For me, subjectivity was kind of a waste of my time. I wanted the scientific answers.


Being a physician and a fundamentalist scientific mind, it is not easy for me to write this. Actually it took me years to make the decision to write about it. And I am doing it now because I believe it is time.



The embryology laboratory is a sacred space for me as I am sure it is for most of my embryologist’s colleagues. It is the place where life starts its purpose and the place where life can end. Embryologists are able to witness the marvelous creation of human embryos and their behavior during the whole process of division, when they are in the incubators and need to be manipulated, either to change dishes or to prepare them for the journey of going back to the endometrium (part of the uterus), for them to complete their job of implantation and growing. It is a very interesting place to work. And, as I mentioned before, I love it. Going to work, for me, is an adventure every day.


One day, I started hearing voices in the laboratory. It was impossible to hear voices on a place where I work by myself; the security to enter the place is really tight, and the walls and doors have being designed to maintain the area quiet and clean. The embryology laboratory can be even cleaner and quieter than a surgery theatre. The voices came from everywhere. I turned down the classical music always played when I am working, but the voices kept coming back even louder. I could not understand what they said; it was like a different language. At first I was scared, then I composed myself and began to feel interested in listening better. However, nothing, I could not understand a single word or sentence. It was gibberish for me. I finished and went home.


I started to have dreams with real meaning. Dreams with music I never heard before in my life. Voices were singing songs I never heard before. And as a musician it was even hard the fact that I could not recognize any of the instruments played. I had no words to describe it. There were people looking at me with pride, and I felt they were happy to see me. I didn’t know why I could remember the dreams so vividly and with so much detail, and the fact that I was having them in the first place. I started to have severe headaches and even needed to see doctors for my pains. Every diagnose was different, even hydrocephaly and a tumor came into the picture. What was happening to me? I took time off, visited many doctors, and took all the kind of painkillers that could possibly take; however the pain kept coming stronger. I could not work for months.


Another dream came. This time there were six old men sitting in chairs on a semi-circle, we were in Stonehenge, and I could recognize it immediately because I used to live in Amesbury just 5 minutes away from it. They were sitting in chairs that were sort of floating around the stones, and told me without words the message I needed to hear: “you are a bridge between worlds and a new generation is coming, we need you to listen better”. I could not help but asking myself: “what is happening here?” Was I going crazy? I was afraid to talk to anyone about it. The news could be as disturbing as the fact that they were coming from me. Because I had a reputation of being pragmatic, practical, logical and sometimes even harsh. None of these dreams sounded real but they were very real to me. There was a clear message: “A bridge between worlds”.




Being in the embryology laboratory is a deep meaningful experience. It is the thin and really short connection with the here and now and another dimension containing beings who are prepared to come to this physical world. These beings are communicating, and they have been trying to do so for a very long time. We just were not ready to listen.


To make the story short (the unabridged version of this story will be available on my forthcoming book), throughout my process of growth and meditations I came across the following conclusions. Our bodies contain pure energy, this energy is transformed once we die and go to another dimension, dimension we do not know yet. As Albert Einstein once said, energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another. In this dimension we will review our actions, thoughts, inner feelings, experiences, and all the good and bad we did and created in this physical world. To be prepared for this transition we must listen carefully, we must see the signs and the way our spiritual guides are trying to communicate. We have decided our paths long before we were born, the destiny we chose to overcome will happen and we will live it alongside light masters who are dedicated to guide us throughout our physical lifetime, in this way we will vibrate in higher frequencies. Love is the pure energy surrounding everything. That is the real love. And Albert Einstein also said that everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for insects as well as for the stars. Human beings, vegetables or cosmic dust; we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance.


When I am inside the embryology laboratory and admire the moment of creation/fertilization, resulting from the union of the egg and the sperm, I can understand how important we all are for this world. The embryos communicate to me in a way I cannot describe, or at least it is really difficult for me to describe it. They are alive and already make their own decisions, I call it “embryo consciousness”, and is possible if we study Kabbalah and understand the deepest of this affirmation in the atomic scale. Embryos are composed of atoms and these atoms come with consciousness on them. If they want to divide and continue to live they will do so, if they wish to die they will die, no matter what I do. If they want to die, then will let me know I have to let them go because it is OK, it is not their time yet or their time was meant to be as brief as hours. It is a complex as if we try to understand quantum physics in a brief period of time. They just want to feel inside the cell for a while, even if that cell does not survive. It is a way of learning and gain the experience. Because every time a being comes to the physical plane or physical universe it is a way for them to learn something. They have control over the quantum universe, that universe we have been not able to understand yet. I can even feel when they wish me to speak or communicate something specific to their parents before the embryo transfer. How can I do that? I don’t know. I have no proof of that.




I started to find ways of growing spiritually. I needed more answers to all the things happening. And I knew the answers would come trough spiritual growth. On a dream, I was told to get the book of Bob Olson about the afterlife. To be honest I never heard of him before. I got it and read it all in one day. Most of the answers to my questions where in the book. And it made me realize I was not alone during this quest; other scientists have gone through the same path looking for answers, the same answers. Then I started to meet people who read about different things, spiritual things not related to any particular religion. And fortunately I came across to Reiki.




Reiki was the beginning of my discovering. It was the way for me to channel my thoughts and feelings, and to prepare myself for the messages I needed to get. I took Reiki classes with an amazing person, Gretchen Swank; and during the attunement the messages came so clearly that I could see the masters standing in front of me saying: “thank you Lucy, thank you for decide to listen”. Thanks to Reiki I can listen. The communication channel has been cleaned and tuned in a way I can see, feel and hear the messages clearly. Better news, my headaches were gone and I was completely cured.


We have had success with many difficult cases in reproduction and fertility. Cases that nobody wants to take because there is no more clinical explanation for their failure. The so called “unexplained infertility”, a term that has been growing lately, because every day there are more and more couples who are so energetically blocked that a fertility procedure is not enough. The body needs to be prepared and energetically ready to receive that life. And those beings that are coming will need much more love, because they decided to come to contribute with this society, on this physical plane, in ways that will improve our world. They have learned so much in another lifetimes that now they wish to use their knowledge to and for our society, because this world needs a change. It has been contaminated with wars, ego, hate, greed, anger, frustration and disappointment; now this is the time of the new era for the change. That is why us, the embryologists, have become a “bridge between worlds”. There are many ways they are coming to the world right now, most of them are coming from another civilizations where they lived in constant spiritual growth. Now they need a healthy vessel to live on Earth.




Science has developed so fast that genetic engineering is expanding in ways to decode most of the diseases. There are predictive models for the diagnosis of diseases in embryos, even before they are implanted into the uterus. Because of these tools, it is possible for us, the specialists in reproductive medicine, to choose healthy embryos. Those embryos will be disease-free. This was not possible decades ago. Years ago humans were conceived coming with disabilities and diseases, most of them genetically related.



I usually say that these clever minds, scientists, explorers, dreamers, are the ones that change our World. However, we cannot live more than 50 o 60 productive years. Getting old is a huge disadvantage, and takes time and effort to develop ideas after certain age. There are so many factors against humans to accomplish their ideas and prove them, and that is one of the many opportunities for science today.


I have read many stories about people getting scared with genetic engineers, stem cell researchers, the human embryo researchers; it is sad to see that some people prefer diseases instead of a healthy human, because they are afraid of change. This new population coming to the world will accomplish things that will amaze us in no more than 50 years. This is a new generation that I’d like to call “the extended healthier generation”. They will do great things in this world, they will leave longer and healthier, and they will accomplish in 10 years things that would have taken us 100 years to accomplish. We need to go faster, to explore deeply and to grow inside. That is a secret for a better world and great achievements.


I always said that humans should live more than 300 years. Our productive time on earth is too short to do all the things we need to do. In order to leave a good contribution in this world we need more time. However, our bodies are destined to face the ruthless reality of getting old, so we either continue with the artificial intelligence to leave our brain’s content inside a computer, or create a new type of human being, healthier bodies and intelligent. The later is the best solution, in my view, because it provides a body to accomplish the task. And the human race will prevail.


When I witness death of embryos in the laboratory, is a sad moment for me. Not easy to witness the death of a cell fighting to divide or to become the best embryo. Some of them wait for me to witness their moment of death, and some of them die when I am not there. Many feelings and thoughts run inside of me when that happens. But I have learned to let go. I learnt every being has chosen their time in this lifetime, and I must accept their will. My duty it is to help the parents to accept that fact also, and that is not an easy task.


With the help of Reiki I can channel the energy of the patient and also the embryos. Positive and negative energies are constantly moving in balance in the universe. Reiki allowed me to see, hear and feel more clearly, and I have been fulfilled with light and love. And Kabbalah gave me the knowledge to understand why we are here and what is our purpose in this physical plane or physical universe.



I now share my story; hoping people understand the purpose of it. For us, scientists, explorers, believers, people who achieved great things in the world, let’s make the difference. I learnt to see, hear and feel and my life was changed. Keep your mind open and your heart will make you listen. The truth of life is actually very simple; it is just hard to see for the first time, until you begin to see.

Thermodynamics and reproduction. Where the energy comes from?

How can we describe energy? Energy is a property that cannot be created or destroyed. It is also a mechanical work or heat in thermodynamic language. However, it is really difficult to describe what is energy in biological systems.


British physicist Lord Kelvin once said: “There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement.”

Thermodynamics is mainly a matter of discovering and then using the principles, or laws, that govern energy transformations and working out the relationship between those principles (1).

The First Law of Thermodynamics related heat, work and internal energy. It tells us that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, despite being able to change form; the total energy of a reaction, and indeed of the universe, is constant. The First Law tells us with breathtaking generality that a boundary on the possible is a basic characteristic of our universe (2).




The Second Law of Thermodynamics makes biological processes more interesting, including the Entropy of systems. This is the measure of the order of a system, in a way of describing how molecules are arranged in space, and how these molecules change when the system change temperature, pressure, volume, etc. It is a degree of disorder or randomness. The Second Law of Thermodynamics is a principle, which states that in any cyclic process the entropy will increase or remain the same. In every natural thermodynamic process the sum of the entropies of all participating bodies is increased. So the Second Law says that no natural process can occur unless it is accompanied by an increase in the entropy of the universe. Ultimately every process that occurs in nature is irreversible and unidirectional, with the direction being dictated by the requirement of an overall increase in entropy (3).




All living organisms are highly non-equilibrium systems. A system will exhibit net change if it is not at equilibrium, even if the rate of change is imperceptible.
If we were to measure the changes occurring in living organisms, it will be a different story, because we are talking about isothermal organisms that do not tolerate temperature changes of more than few degrees. Human biological organisms are more complex. In these situations the use of the Gibb’s free energy is necessary. In biology this metric enables us to predict the direction of spontaneous change of a system under the constraints of constant temperature and pressure. These constraints generally apply to all living organisms (4).

The creation of a human embryo is an irreversible process, and consumes lots of energy that need to be previously stored on its parental gametes (sperm and egg). This process occurs in an environment that needs to be right for certain biological functions to occur. Regardless of when, where, or how life began, it is clear that good internal resource management is important to the life of an organism, whatever it might be.

The parental cells (sperm and egg) need to accomplish a series of steps in order to provide this free energy needed for the fertilization of the egg with the sperm, and create a human embryo. This energy is stored and ready to be used as soon as the union happens. This irreversible reaction can be measured to calculate the amount of energy needed to complete the fertilization in vitro.




Biological processes occur at a finite rate, and they are mostly (if not all) irreversible. When an embryo is created in vitro, the media used to accomplish this process has been prepared and equilibrated to be adequate for the biological mechanisms to occur. The cell absorbs most of the nutrients needed and they will also provide the energy to support each division at any different stage. As the embryo grows the energy consumption increases because the cell needs to create more cells and is in constant division. This process does not stop once it is started. The energy required will be directly proportional to the number of divisions and cells present in the embryo. This resulting organism will increase its complexity, internal energy and entropy during development. At some point the embryo will require nutrients and energy that cannot be provided in vitro, and a subsequent embryo transfer needs to be done in order to provide the embryo with the required nutrients and energy given by the endometrium (uterus of the woman). The energy will be provided by this external source in order to continue the growth. It is an irreversible process and requires a continuous supply of energy. It will then go to an open system.

Osmosis, diffusion, membrane transport, all play a role during this cell-growth process; this phenomena allow the cell to get all the necessary nutrients to accomplish its work. If a cell is created in an open system (in vivo) there will be a lot more systems functioning at the same time, and measurements and observation will become difficult. Instead, if a cell is created in a closed system (in vitro), it might be more controlled because it is possible to quantify the nutrients needed to be provided, and the way the systems works, as it is possible to observe this complex system closer.

Is it possible for a living organism to be in equilibrium? If it were, it would not be able to do any useful work in thermodynamic terms. There would be no free energy difference between the reactants and products. The organism would die.
Several biological processes occur during the exchange of energy in vitro, but we need to always remember that no living organism is at equilibrium. This applies not only to the organism as a whole but also for each of its cells.

An in vitro biochemical reaction is a closed system, and it will be at a constant change, especially if this system contains a living organism that will eventually end as part of an open system, as is the case of a human embryo created in vitro that will be transferred into the woman uterus to become a baby.



For life to begin a good internal energy resource management is important. In cellular terms, the most successful organisms are the ones that utilize their energy resources most efficiently. Maintenance of cell structure and growth require a huge number of metabolic and synthetic reactions; a range of complex mechanisms is needed to regulate the highly heterogeneous distributions and flows of matter and energy within the cells (5). The information every cell possesses is encoded on their DNA, and this will dictate its organizational plan during its life. Aging and death may be related to changes in the information processing capability of a cell, however some theories assume it is determined by DNA programming. Either way, the biological meaningful information content of a cell declines toward the end of its life, together with the cease of energy exchange.

Much more should be studied in order to understand more of the biologic thermodynamic processes occurring in closed-controlled systems during in vitro fertilization, to help us understand the biological phenomena occurring in vivo. This might provide useful information about the cells that are at a constant division, and the encoded message during the starting of life until the moment of cellular death.

It should not be so hard. It has been wonderful to live here having a body after all.

I once met a remarkable person, who was ill with terminal lung cancer. He was young still and at the beginning he refused the idea of leaving this world being so young and not having the chance to accomplish his goals during this lifetime. He was devastated by the news. But then, a spectacular change occurred on him, he started being happy and grateful for each day. He lived each of his 90 last days on earth happy. He was determined to make them memorable and amazing. And he succeeded. Those last days with him were some of the most amazing days of my life.

We though humans most times do not value how amazing it is to live every day, and the many advantages of having a healthy vessel to do so, as it is our human bodies. He said: “When I come back I will definitely have a better and healthier body”. I did not understand it by then, now I do. When he returns he will live happier and healthier, because he valued the little time that lifetime gave him, and I got the chance to share special moments with him. We danced, laughed, played, talk for hours. He was during his little and short time on earth one of my best friends.

I admire life for what it is, a gift. Life is not a right as many think. It is a gift the universe gives us to grow and learn. This planet earth it is a good place to learn because it is full of negativity and inhumanity. Humans forgot how to be human.

We are reproducing and bringing new generations who will need us, and their generation will need them. For that, it is important to acknowledge there is a change that has to be made on earth. That change begins with us, evolving humans.humans

When I see embryos forming and the perfection of their cells, it is difficult to imagine their DNA already has all the information of their whole life, their whole existence it has been programmed already into their genes, and it depends on them, their choices, lifestyle, to live a good life. Their human body it has already being prepared, their souls on the other hand needs to grow, because that is the whole purpose of their visit to earth.


It is not difficult to picture this idea. Pictured it makes things a lot easier. To look after our bodies, eat healthier, do more exercise, change our bad habits, avoid negativity and stress, care more about other humans in a compassionate way, and prepare to be open to growth and knowledge. Those are simple qualities required for our contribution during this lifetime. Our appreciation for every day, and the gifts of being capable of using the natural resources our mother nature has provided are vital in the development of the required abilities for being part of this changing system. A system that promises huge future changes. If you were able to appreciate and learn from future coming generations as I do, I am sure you will be more open to what I am letting you know now.
Just try to picture it. Humans, perfect humans, perfect generations of humans coming every day with huge capabilities of learning and the knowledge to accept the needed changes in this world. They will have the task to accomplish the growth and learning system that humans need to change inhumanity and indifference to the life they have been given.


Our design it is not to follow rules and obey as robots do. There is not programming for our brains and the way we are looking to learn. There should not be a set of regulations in the way we are looking to accomplish our goals and dreams. We are free to decide the way we will live, and that should be respected. There are boundaries for respect and tolerance. Growth is a dynamic process that requires evolution and knowledge. Our differences in being humans are marvelous and should be used as an advantage of learning diversity from other humans and the rest of our species. Love, compassion, understanding, caring, tolerance, respect, knowledge. Do not allow anyone to take your freedom of thinking or believes, and treat others believes and thoughts with respect.

War is a really waste of time. Nothing good comes from that.

Peace and love are the main ingredients for our growth, and for our future generations. We are in charge of those future generations, it will be our responsibility to make the world a better place or complete this massive destruction we are causing.
